Bento
casual Japanese • 2,000sf • Los Angeles, CA

Bento is a casual food concept inspired by traditional Japanese cuisine, serving food in a simple and evocative way. The challenge was to create a scalable and flexible concept for adapting to multiple project locations, while maintaining the brand’s continuity. The façade’s minimal design, capped by a cornice with a flush orange glow, frames composed views of the eatery’s crisp, luminous space beyond. The minimal nature of the exterior is further realized in the interiors. A lush integration of natural materials is found inside: slabs of stone for floors, marble for surfaces, wood for paneling and an undulating ribbed ceiling. This palette balances the vivid orange Bento brand. Green and orange reinforce the idea of freshness, energy and Bento’s commitment to sustainability. The open nature of the counter is intended to foster customer interaction directly with chefs preparing their food at the sushi bar, the robata grill or the salad station. The space is punctuated by community-style tables of varying heights that further enhance Bento’s dynamic dining experience.
